Residency and visas

The BVI Remote Worker Programme (the 'BVI Workcation') allows remote workers to stay for up to a year with an application fee, but there is no income-tax exposure in the BVI. Residency and work permits are otherwise tightly controlled in favour of 'belongers'. Some applicants use the BVI as a base for a company without relocating.

BVI: common questions

Is the BVI on the EU tax blacklist?

The BVI is not on the Annex I blacklist, but it appears on Annex II, the EU 'grey list' of jurisdictions committed to reforms, per the 9 October 2026 update. Grey-list status can trigger enhanced due diligence from EU banks and counterparties. Check the Council of the EU for updates.

Does the BVI have corporate tax?

No. BVI business companies pay no corporate income, capital gains, withholding or inheritance taxes, provided they do not trade locally. They pay annual government licence fees (about US$450 for most small companies) and must meet economic substance rules if they carry on relevant activities.

How much does a BVI company cost?

Setting up a BVI company typically costs about $1,000–$2,500 including government and registered agent fees, and renewal costs about $800–$2,000 per year. The company must keep a registered agent and registered office in the BVI.

Is a BVI company good for e-commerce?

It is rarely ideal. Payment processors such as Stripe and many banks restrict BVI entities, and some marketplaces treat them as high risk. BVI companies are more commonly used as holding vehicles, for investments or for crypto and token projects.

Do BVI companies have to file accounts?

BVI companies must keep financial records for at least five years and, since 2023, file an annual financial return with their registered agent. The returns are not publicly filed with the registry but may be requested by authorities.
