Questions people ask
Is Estonia or USA better for a new company?
Estonia has the lower overall tax burden (22% corporate, 22% top personal). Estonia is easier to set up, while USA is cheaper to run. USA carries more weight with banks, investors and customers. Overall, Estonia scores 7.7/10 on our index vs 7.4/10.
Is Estonia e-Residency worth it?
It is worth it if you want an EU-based company, SEPA banking-like access via fintechs and fully online administration. It is not a tax-saving tool by itself: you still pay tax in your country of residence, and 0% on retained profit helps mainly if you reinvest in the company.
How much tax does an Estonian company pay?
Nothing on retained profit. When you distribute dividends the company pays 22% of the gross distribution (22/78 of the net dividend). The previously announced increase to 24% for 2026 was cancelled.
Can a non-US resident open a US LLC?
Yes. Non-residents can form an LLC in any state remotely using a registered agent, with no US visa, SSN or office needed. You then obtain an EIN from the IRS (via Form SS-4 by fax or mail if you have no SSN). Wyoming, Delaware and New Mexico are the usual choices.
Does a foreign-owned US LLC pay US taxes?
A single-member LLC owned by a non-resident alien with no US-source effectively connected income generally pays no US federal income tax, but it must file Form 5472 with a pro-forma Form 1120 annually (the penalty for failing to file is $25,000). Income that is effectively connected with a US trade or business is taxed, and certain US-source passive income faces 30% withholding. Your home country may tax the profits.
